Visions of Energy Transition for Poland

Green European FoundationLooking to Germany's 'energiewende' for inspiration, this GEF seminar with the Heinrich Böll Foundation will explore the potential for local production of renewable energy in Poland.

Currently, Poland is working on a comprehensive energy strategy, in line with the EU's target of reducing carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, called The National Program of Low-Carbon Economy Development.
In terms of long-term energy policy planning, the key issue will consist in defining the energy mix and its most important sectors. Is it possible to achieve such development within big enterprises that are centrally run? Or should Poland totally change its structure of energy production and transmission to enable citizens to produce energy for themselves and then to sell it to local and regional networks?

In Germany, where the policy of energy transition has been implemented for years, there were four million energy producers in 2010. According to estimates, in Poland there exists the potential for more than two million prosumers to emerge by 2020. However, do we have the political support in Poland to make this vision a reality? What obstacles hinder Poland's way to energy transition? Can we build on the experience of other countries such as Germany or Denmark and, if so, what is the best way to do it?
